2022 Genesis Electrified GV70 EV video review: Quick drive
Midsize SUVs really don’t need any introduction in this country. A more popular, competitive segment, you’d struggle to find. And, as the regular medium SUVs gain an ever-stronger market share, luxury medium SUVs have started to make an impact. Genesis will be looking to tap into that with its Electrified GV70.
Is the Genesis GV70 EV a good car?
As we did with the stablemate Electrified G80, Drive has been given the opportunity to spend some time with a pre-production 2022 Genesis Electrified GV70. It will also be coming to Australia in one trim grade only, a high level of standard specification, normally associated with the Luxury Pack on a Genesis vehicle.
Also like the Electrified G80, the Electrified GV70 will sit atop the range as a halo model, with power and torque that sets it apart from the ‘regular’ GV70 offerings. That means it will usurp the GV70 3.5T AWD with Luxury Pack as the flagship model. It’s happening a lot with electric vehicles as they join the regular range.
We’ll be testing the full launch version in the third quarter of 2022, which means there will be some small changes and fine tuning that hasn’t yet been finalised with the model we’re driving here. Still, there’s no doubt this electric GV70 is going to be impressive.
Given the positioning of the Electrified GV70 at the summit of the GV70 range, you’d expect swathes of standard kit, and Genesis has delivered. 20-inch alloy wheels are unique to the electric version, along with nine exterior colours, three interior trim colours, a 16-speaker 1050-watt Lexicon Harman audio system, driver and front passenger ergo motion seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated outer rear seats, and a panoramic sunroof. Cost options extend to four different matte paint finishes.

What is the Genesis GV70 EV like inside?
Driving the GV70 back-to-back with the G80 at this pre-launch event, the GV immediately felt like the sharper, sportier option, even from behind the wheel. Styling is one thing, but the seating position, driving position, and execution of the cabin, give it a genuinely sporting feel.
Around the tight – and sometimes bumpy – test circuit, the Electrifed GV70 felt composed, balanced, and capable of soaking up regular Aussie roads without fuss. The cabin is comfortable and bright too, the panoramic roof making a difference here as well.
Room in the front seats, is matched by room across the second row, the electric drivetrain once again doing its bit to assist in delivering as much room inside the cabin as possible. Our focus at the launch proper, will be to spend more time behind the wheel on the open road, to find out if the sense of luxury inside the cabin extends to touring.

How big is the screen in the Genesis GV70 EV?
Infotainment will be a big factor in this segment, at this price point, so the 14.5-inch high-definition touchscreen will need to work, and work well to make the intended buyer happy.
The 16-speaker audio system promises to be a good one, and we’ll assess its functionality at launch when we get to spend more time behind the wheel.
Is the Genesis GV70 EV a safe car?
Given the safety rating of the regular GV70 range, and the fact that the Electrified GV70 will come standard with a full suite of safety inclusions, we expect it to score well on the ANCAP test. We’ll update these details as soon as we know the test results after the local launch.
Four-cylinder GV70 models carry a five-star ANCAp rating from 2021.
Across the range, the GV70 comes with eight airbags are standard, including a centre airbag between the front seats. A full suite of electronic safety technology is also standard including blind-spot monitoring, blind-spot camera view, driver attention warning, forward collision avoidance (car/pedestrian/cyclist detection with junction assist), high-beam assist, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, smart cruise control, surround view monitor and trailer stability assist.

How much does the Genesis GV70 EV cost in Australia?
Genesis Australia has told us to expect a price in the range of $105,000 to $115,000 before on-road costs, which as far as luxury medium SUVs go, is within the range we’d expect. Again, it’s tough to pinpoint direct competitors because you’re not always comparing an apple with an apple.
A solid warranty, quality after sales service and an emphasis on the ownership experience is something Genesis has been bullish about since launch in this country, and those factors undoubtedly add to the value for money equation.
What is the Genesis GV70 EV like to drive?
On paper, the Electrified GV70 puts forward an impressive case. Two electric motors with a ten second boost mode for outputs of 360kW and 700Nm, and 605Nm without boost mode. The latter will be more than enough for nearly all driving situations. When you put that much grunt to all four wheels, the GV70 feels rapid off the mark or when you roll on.
That hard charging sensation you get off the mark, continues for as long as you dare nailing the accelerator pedal. This segment might not target sporty driver’s specifically, but those who enjoy a spirited drive, will love the Electrified GV70. It’s a fast SUV.
There’s a 77.4kWh battery pack, which delivers a claimed range of 450+km, and with 350kW rapid charging capability, you can get from 10-80 percent in less than 20 minutes. Multi-stage regenerative braking with Hyundai’s i-pedal, means you can eke charge back when you’re on and off the brakes.
Genesis won’t be making wholesale changes to the suspension for our local market but will be sending information and data back to HQ. Different components within the suspension system will be evaluated under local conditions, as well as overseas tunes, to find the best combination for our roads.
On our protracted drive experience, the Electrified GV70 hid its mass beautifully, turning in neatly, staying on line, and remaining balanced. It’s an enjoyable SUV to drive, and we look forward to a longer drive on some twisty country roads, to find out if that sense of balance stacks up.

Should I buy a Genesis GV70 EV?
Price is so often the dictator of success in this country – with supply currently playing a support role too, of course. I think the Electrified GV70 is priced in such a way that it will tempt buyers. While a longer launch drive will tell us more, on face value and after our short drive, it stacks up nicely.
