2022 BMW iX1: Baby electric SUV imagined
With BMW's smallest battery-powered SUV on its way, we imagine what the new model could look like.
The upcoming 2022 BMW iX1 promises to be one of the first models in the company's new electrified line-up, based on the company's smallest SUV.
The electric version of the X1 was spotted undergoing cold-weather testing in November 2020, adorned in camouflaged – but now illustrator Jean Francois Herbert from SB-Medien has put together this render to provide a glimpse of what we can expect from BMW's baby electric SUV.
The iX1 will be positioned as an entry-level model into a battery-powered BMW range, with the i1 – the brand's fully-electric 1 Series – still reportedly some years away.
British publication Autocar is reporting the iX1 will be launched before 2023, suggesting an official unveiling could happen towards the end of 2021.
While little is known about what is under the bonnet, rumours suggest the iX1 will use a detuned version of the iX3's powertrain, which uses a 74kWh battery pack sending 210kW/400Nm to the rear wheels through a single electric motor.
BMW confirmed in July 2020 it was working on fully-electric versions of the 3 Series, 4 Series, and 5 Series, with plug-in hybrid versions also in the pipeline.
It's expected the i4 will soon be revealed, to be followed by a high-performance model from BMW M.
