2019 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 to rival Hellcat with over 520kW – UPDATED
Updated: Ford Australia has confirmed the Mustang Shelby GT500 is a US-only model. Full quote at the bottom.
The new Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 has been teased at the 2018 Detroit motor show ahead of going on sale some time next year.
Ford says the new Mustang Shelby GT500 will be powered by a supercharged V8 with over 700 horsepower or 522kW, and "will be the most powerful street-legal production Ford ever".
Developed by Ford Performance, the Mustang Shelby GT500 is said to feature "new innovative track technologies [and] performance hardware".
In the computer-generated teaser video (top) we get a sneak peek of the new model's "aggressive and functional track-tuned styling" with glimpses of its bonnet vents, side sills, rear spoiler, rear diffuser, alloy wheels, and front air intakes.
Aside from the power output target, we don't know much else about the vehicle. Should the company's engineers hit their mark, the Mustang Shelby GT500 will rival the Hellcat-powered models in Dodge and Jeep stables.
The 6.2-litre supercharged V8 Hellcat engine cranks out 527kW of power and 881Nm of torque, and is fitted variants of the Dodge Challenger coupe, and Dodge Charger sedan. It's also used in the recently unveiled Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.
Australia

Damion Smy, head of product communications for Ford Australia, has informed us: "The recently announced Mustang Shelby GT500 is a US market model. We have no announcements to make regarding this model for Australia."
