With fuel prices increasing, running costs matter just as much as sticker prices. Here, we dive into the top 10 most fuel-efficient dual-cab utes in Australia.


If you're in the market for a new dual-cab ute as a tax write-off, or perhaps just as a new set of wheels, consider putting fuel efficiency at the top of your wishlist.

The fuel consumption on vehicles can vary based on a range of factors including the vehicle's transmission, body style, and engine size, as well as if it's a 4x4 or 4x2 model.

Within the dual-cab ute segment, the most efficient dual-cab utes are the Isuzu D-Max SX and Mazda BT-50 XS, which share the same 1.9-litre diesel engine.

According to their respective manufacturers, this engine uses 6.7 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres travelled.

Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50

Sharing a 1.9-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, certain variants of the Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50 ranges have a claimed fuel economy of 6.7L/100km.

These variants include certain Isuzu D-Max SX and Mazda BT-50 XS models. The 1.9-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine produces 110kW of power and 350Nm of torque.

If you're looking for more power, Isuzu and Mazda offer a 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produces 140kW and 450Nm. Depending on the variant it has a claimed fuel economy of 7.7–8.0L/100km.

All models come with a 76-litre fuel tank.

Toyota HiLux

The Toyota HiLux Workmate 4x4 and the mild-hybrid SR, SR5, and Rogue variants, alongside the Ford Ranger, have a combined claimed fuel economy of 7.2L/100km.

The 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the Workmate 4x4 produces 110kW and 400Nm. The diesel-powered Workmate has an 80-litre fuel tank.

Meanwhile, the new 2.8-litre mild hybrid engine – which debuted on the HiLux in March 2024 – produces 150kW and 500Nm. This engine is offered in SR, SR5, and Rogue variants. It too has an 80-litre fuel tank and runs on diesel.

Toyota offers four powertrain options across its HiLux range. The least fuel-efficient engine is the 2.7-litre petrol from the Workmate 4x2 dual-cab. Its claimed fuel efficiency is 10.4L/100km.

Ford Ranger

Certain variants within the Ford Ranger line-up have a claimed fuel economy of 7.2L/100km when powered by the brand's 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine.

These variants include the XL 4x4 single and super cab chassis Hi-Rider, XL 4x4 super cab tray back Hi-Rider, XLT 4x4 super cab tray back, Sport and Wildtrak.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder bi-turbo diesel engine can produce 154kW and 500Nm.

Alternatively, the six-cylinder 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine produces 184kW and 600Nm and has a claimed fuel economy of 8.4L/100km.

Ford also offers a six-cylinder 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine on the top-spec Raptor, which produces 292kW and 583Nm. It has a claimed fuel economy of 11.5L/100km.

In showrooms from April 2024, Mitsubishi claims its next-generation Triton has a claimed fuel economy of 7.5L/100km. This is based on the GLX dual-cab pick-up variant with two-wheel drive and an automatic transmission.

Other models within the Triton range jump up ever so slightly to 7.7L/100km, including the GLX, GLX+, GLS, and GSR dual-cab tray four-wheel-drive automatic variants.

Mitsubishi only offers its latest Triton in a dual-cab body style. A 2.4-litre four-cylinder bi-turbo diesel engine powers the entire range and it produces 150kW and 470Nm.

Light commercial newcomer JAC introduced its T9 in 2024. Both Haven and Oasis variants offer a claimed combined fuel economy of 7.6L/100km.

All other Cannon models have a combined fuel efficiency figure of 9.4L/100km.

The SsangYong Musso range has a claimed fuel economy of 8.6L/100km. It is powered by a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produces 133kW and 400Nm.

Ssangyong says the optional XLV Pack decreases fuel efficiency to 9.0L/100km.

The XLV Pack adds 300mm of length to the tub and 110mm of length to the wheelbase. Customers who opt for the XLV Pack will also receive an increase in payload from 790kg up to 1010kg.

The engine will receive a torque boost of 20Nm at 1600–26000rpm for customers with the automatic transmission. It's also worth mentioning the XLV Pack changes the rear suspension to leaf springs from multi-link with coil springs.

LDV T60 Max

LDV claims the T60 has a combined fuel economy of between 9.2–9.3L/100km depending on the variant.

The manual variants within the T60 Max range have a claimed combined fuel economy of 9.2L/100km, while the models with an automatic transmission have a slighter higher claimed fuel economy of 9.3L/100km.
