2024 Mazda CX-5 diesel axed in Australia, prices rise with updated model range
The Mazda CX-5 mid-size SUV has dropped the option of diesel power, alongside a reduced model range, new features and higher prices.
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 mid-size SUV has lost the option of diesel power as part of a model range overhaul that adds new features for a higher price.
The decision – confirmed today in a media statement about a Mazda business fleet program – sees the CX-5 follow the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan X-Trail, Subaru Forester and Volkswagen Tiguan in dropping diesel engines.
Diesel accounts for less than 4 per cent of Mazda CX-5 sales, and was only available on the Touring Active and Akera model grades, for a $3000 premium over non-turbo 2.5-litre petrol all-wheel-drive versions.
Alongside the axing of diesel there are some mild changes to the rest of the Mazda CX-5 line-up, due in showrooms in January 2024 with price rises of $370 to $620, compared to the latest price list for the outgoing model.
Compared to the prices listed at the start of this year, the 2024 CX-5 is between $1090 and $1340 more expensive.
The Touring Active – effectively a Touring model with green highlights inside and out – has been dropped after less than two years in showrooms, having been introduced in early 2022.
The standard CX-5 Touring remains, and for 2024 gains unique 19-inch machined alloy wheels (up from 17s), and full synthetic leather-look 'Maztex' seat upholstery, replacing a Maztex and suede combination.
There is a new front grille pattern, and a hands-free functionality for the power tailgate on the GT SP and Akera models. The latter feature returns after it was dropped due to semiconductor shortages in mid-2022.
Also new is a Platinum Quartz exterior colour (replacing Sonic Silver), new interior inlays for the G35 Akera, and for the G20 Maxx, wireless/wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity (with touch functionality) – replacing wired-only versions.
Wireless versions of these features are now standard across the entire Mazda CX-5 range, running on a 10.25-inch infotainment screen.
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 is available to order now ahead of first showroom arrivals in January 2024.
