The new plug-in Kia Sorento has arrived in Australia, with plenty of technology and a frugal drivetrain – but the new tech comes at a cost.

- Plug-in Hybrid model arrives in GT-Line trim
- 195kW/350Nm turbo PHEV system delivers 68km electric range
- Priced from $81,990 drive-away
The 2022 Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) has arrived in Australia, as the first of two electrified versions of the Drive Car of the Year-winning SUV.
Priced from $81,990 drive-away (or $79,330 before on-road costs), the new Sorento PHEV becomes the most expensive Kia ever sold in Australia, surpassing the $70,990 drive-away Niro Electric Sport. However, the outlay grants buyers the seven-seat SUV’s range-topping GT-Line specification, with twin screens, nappa leather and all-wheel-drive as standard.
The all-wheel-drive GT-Line PHEV’s $81,990 drive-away price tag places it above the $67,290 drive-away price of the equivalent diesel all-wheel-drive (AWD) GT-Line variant, and above the $64,290 drive-away of the front-wheel-drive, petrol range-topper.
Supply constraints mean the PHEV driveline won’t expand to cheaper variants below the GT-Line for the immediate future. A 'conventional' hybrid powertrain – similar to a Toyota Kluger Hybrid – will arrive in the first weeks of 2022, with a choice of front- and all-wheel drive expected to be offered.
Powering the Sorento PHEV is a 132kW/265Nm 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder, paired to a 67kW/304Nm electric motor placed between the engine and six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission for combined outputs of 195kW and 350Nm.
A 14kWh lithium-ion battery mounted below the second-row seats delivers 68km of all-electric range (according to lenient ADR 81/02, or NEDC testing), and combined fuel economy of 1.6L/100km (with 91 RON regular unleaded supported by the vehicle).
Plugging the Type 2 cable supplied with the vehicle into a single-phase socket allows for 3.3kW AC charging, good for a 15 to 95 per cent charge in three hours and 25 minutes.
Standard equipment in the PHEV all but matches the equivalent GT-Line diesel, with differences limited to the fitment of the Sport+ model’s 19-inch alloy wheels (rather than the petrol and diesel’s 20-inch wheels), PHEV-specific badging, and battery and charging displays within the instrument cluster.
All Model Year 2022 Kia Sorento models wear the company’s new corporate logo – with the rebranded petrol and diesel variants also in showrooms now. Traffic-sign recognition has also been added for MY22.
Standard features bundled with the GT-Line PHEV include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.25-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, quilted nappa leather upholstery, 360-degree camera, electric front seats with heating and ventilation, and a full suite of active safety technology.
Seven colours are available: Clear White, Aurora Black Pearl, Gravity Blue, Mineral Blue, Snow White Pearl, Silky Silver and Steel Grey. All hues bar Clear White command a $695 premium.
