2017 Subaru XV leaked in Japanese media
All-new crossover revealed ahead of Geneva debut next month
The next-generation 2017 Subaru XV has been leaked in the Japanese press ahead of its world debut at the Geneva motor show next month.
While the company hasn't confirmed whether these images are real, they were reportedly lifted from a Japanese magazine.
In its home market, the new XV is said to offer two powertrain options; a 1.6-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre petrol, both naturally aspirated.
The smaller engine is reported to develop 115hp (86kW), while the larger 2.0-litre pumps out 154hp (115kW) - the latter seems to be the same engine under the bonnet of the new Impreza, on which the XV is based.
In terms of its design the new XV stays true to the original concept, essentially a jacked-up version of the Impreza hatch - in similar fashion to how the Outback is an off-road styled Liberty wagon.
Tougher black bumpers, front and rear skid plates, a higher ride height and unique alloy wheels distinguish the XV from its less-capable Impreza sibling.
The Japanese press materials say the XV will be available in nine colours - in line with Masahiko Inoue's comments last year about the small SUV being available in "bright colour[s]" - and will go on sale in its domestic market from April this year.
It's worth noting the two frontal images of the blue and orange cars appear to be identical, with the obvious exception of the colour - probably to add some visual drama for the magazine cover.
Australia
Scheduled to be revealed on March 7 at the 2017 Geneva motor show, the new XV is expected to hit Australian showrooms around mid-year.

The company's local arm is keen to get the all-new model into local showrooms considering the sales success of the current model.
Speaking with CarAdvice last month, David Rowley, Subaru Australia's communications manager, said: "Given we sold over 8000 last year, we’re certainly pleased with the ongoing strong interest in what is a mature model and, anecdotally, we don’t receive much customer and prospect enquiry about diesel or hybrid options for XV".
