On this week's episode, we go back to basics with a legendary open-top, rear-wheel-drive, manual sports car. Travelling through Victoria's stunning High Country, we prove that you can indeed enjoy a touring drive in a convertible, no matter what the weather gods have in store.
Drive Season 3 screens on Channel 9 at 1pm each Saturday. The full episode will be available to video on 9Now after it airs.
We departed from Melbourne, hit the highway and made a pit stop to explore the charming town of Beechworth. First settled in the gold rush in the mid-1850s, it's reinvented itself and evolved into a thriving tourist destination – known for its well-preserved buildings and wine producing.
We then drove south and explored the regions of Myrtleford and Ovens. One must-see spot is Pepo Farms. Located in Ovens, it's the first and only location to produce pumpkin seeds in Australia.
The Victorian High Country boasts talented and passionate local producers, so you won't go hungry if you're travelling through this region. Be sure to stop off at some of the great cafes and restaurants and support the locals.
The Great Alpine Road and Tawonga Gap Road are extraordinary, and even more fun when tackled in an open-top and switching gears the old-fashioned way.
This trip is only a short 40 minutes, which gave us plenty of time to visit Bright – a bustling and picturesque village in the High Country. Here we visited the award-winning photographic gallery, Alpine Light, and enjoyed a meal at the Bright Brewery.
The final activity on the agenda involved a different kind of ride. We were lucky enough to score a private tour at Bogong Horseback Adventures – the ultimate end to a remarkable journey.
The region doesn't disappoint, offering stunning mountains, valleys, rivers and lakes – all perfect locations for adventure and relaxation year-round.
All up, this route through the High Country is 92km and takes just over an hour and a half.
